Penalty Heartbreak For Cowden

Last updated : 26 May 2009 By Cowden Mad
Cowden suffered a depressing 5-4 penalty shootout loss after Cowden and Stenny could not be seperated after 120 minutes of football. Jay Steins weak penalty was saved easily by the Stenny keeper and it will be Stenhousemuir who head into the 2nd division next season.

The match was on a knife-edge after the first leg had ended 0-0 at Central Park. This meant that the winners of the game would be promoted.  Cowden had the bulk of the ball but as per usual with Cowden chances were few and far between - Mark Ramsay created numerous chances for himself but was denied by the on form Stenny goalie.

Stenhousemuir had the best chance of the game when John Ovenstone somehow hit the bar with the goal at his mercy.  The large Cowden support were right behind the team for the penalties but after goals from Gemmell and Fleming, Stein missed.  Despite Baxter and Mbu also hitting the back of the net, Davie Hay had no chance with any of the Stenny penalties. Another season in the 3rd division looms.

The fantastic Cowden support gave a standing ovation to the team as they left the field clearly distraught at the fact that a 40 game season came down to one missed penalty.
