John Gemmell and Marek Tomana returned to the Cowden line up this week albeit Joe Mbu and Paul McQuade were on the sidelines as they weren't 100% fit. New loannee Greg Ross from Dunfermline also slotted into the right back spot to replace Mark Baxter, suspended after his indiscretion v Airdrie United last week. Tomana and Gemmell celebrated their return by combining for an opening goal after just 2 minutes had elapsed. Tomana split the defence and Gemmell finished in fine style.

Tomana and Gemmell indeed were the stars of the first half with Tomana tormenting the Berwick defence with his skills and Gemmell giving a shaky Berwick rearguard a hard time. Cowden were moving very smoothly and it was no surprise when a fine Greg Ross cross from the right was bulleted into the net via a spectacular Brian Fairbairn header in 9 minutes. Thereafter Cowden really should have gone on to close out the game but somehow Berwick held out as Cowden piled on the pressure. Berwick though looked occasionally dangerous in breakaways where the Cowden defence was stretched on occasion.

Half time came with Cowden on easy street but Berwick rolled up their sleeves for the second period and it seemed Cowden felt they already had the points in the bag. It was Berwick who now took the game to Cowden and on the hour mark centre half Ewart rose to head home a well placed Darren Gribben corner. Berwick's tails were up but Danny Lennon then made changes with Darren McGregor dropping back to centre half, Jay Shields coming on to fill in for Darren in midfield. Sandy Hodge went off as did Ramsay and Gemmell. Stein and Dempster came on for Cowden. Dempster replaced Gemmell whose head and neck was swathed in balaclava like bandages as he was being troubled by a neck abcess. The changes seemed to help Cowden settle down again.

The game then was fairly evenly contested with chances at both ends but Berwick tried hard to claim an equaliser. Darren Gribben had a free kick saved by Davie Hay and in the final minute another accurate Gribben flag kick was headed back across goal but Jim Lister headed wide. Time up and Cowden fans were a bit relieved but really Cowden should have been out of sight by half time. Over the piece though it was a win that was narrowly merited.

Stars were the aformentioned Tomana and Gemmell along with Davie Hay who gave an accomplished goalkeeping display when it mattered. Cowden therefore maintained their second spot in the League behind Stenhousemuir.
