Cowden Off The Mark

Gareth Wardlaw scored a stunning goal as Cowden failed to turn their domination into 3 points at Central Park. The Cowden squad had Craig Winter back in the lineup after being signed from Forfar during the week (yes the same Craig Winter who played for Cowden for years) and there was a trialist keeper in goals.

Cowden dominated the opening proceedings and created a good chance after the impressive Fairbairn got to the by-line and cut back for Wardlaw who fired over the bar. Alloa rarely threatened and it was no suprise when Cowdne took the lead on the half hour mark. Wardlaw picked the ball up on the edge of the box before turning and unleashing a stunning strike which flew into the back of the net.

Alloa then upped their game and forced a corner which was cleared but only to Andy Scott who composed himself before shooting towards goal. A wicked deflection made the ball spin up and over the trialist keeper who had no chance.

The second half saw Cowden continue to dominate and create chances. Adamson fired wildly over when the goal was gaping and he also had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside (against John Robertson). All Alloa could muster was a couple of dangerous inswinging free kicks that the trialist keeper delt with superbly.

The match ended 1-1 and Cowden can take heart from a superb performance. With players to come back from suspension and injury, Cowden can feel optimistic about their chances this year. Next up? East Fife at New Bayview next Saturday.
