Cowdenbeath v Berwick Rangers

Last updated : 11 September 2008 By Cowden Mad
Cowdenbeath take on Berwick Rangers in the league this Saturday. Its a big game for us after 3 defeats in a row. Berwick have had a poor start to their league campaign with 5 points being picked up out of a possible 15. The Berwick side will be desperate to get 3 points on the board so it should make for an exciting game.

Cowden and Berwick have played each other lots of times in recent years. Berwick fans have bad memories of 2005/06 season. Despite being unbeaten against Cowden that season, picking up 10 points, it was the Blue Brazil who snatched the title from Berwick after an action packed climax to the season. Last season both sides were relegated from the 2nd division. The game of the season between the 2 sides saw Cowden run out 5-4 winners at Shielfield in a game that had more twists in it than a barrell of pretzels! Dennis McLaughlan was the hero with his last gasp goal to win the game and take his own tally for the game to 4.  McLaughlan is not the first player to score 4 goals for Cowden down at Shielfield. On the 20th October 2001 future Cowden manager Keith Wright banged in a 4 goal haul as the Blue Brazil turned on the style to secure a 5-2 victory.

There are a few players who could feature on Saturday who have played for the opposite team. Brian Fairbairn played last season at Berwick and is now Cowdens top scorer in all competitions with 4 goals. Striker Andy Howat was with Cowden at the start of last season but moved to Berwick during the January transfer window. Joining Berwick this summer was Graham Guy. Graham played for us the season we won the league and will be a threat from set pieces.  Graham played in 43 matches for Cowden scoring 3 goals. Also adding to the ex Cowden contingent at Berwick is Darren Gribben.  Darren played in 36 games for Cowden scoring 14 goals (including a stunning goal in the cup against St Johnstone). Gribben seems to enjoy playing against Cowden as his performances two seasons ago for Forfar proved.

The last game between the 2 sides saw Berwick run out 2-1 winners.  Cowden had taken the lead through a Dene Droudge tap in from a Pat Scullion free kick only for Scott Gemmill to score 2 goals and the 3 points went to Berwick.

If Cowden are to win this game then the players will have to be at the top of their games.  To attract a larger crowd entrance fees for this match have been slashed to £5 for adults and free for OAPS and Kids.
